The word teleportation conjures bodies dissolving on one pad and reassembling on another. The real thing is stranger and more modest: it moves the exact quantum state of a single particle from one place to another â and the particle itself never travels.
Here is the puzzle it solves. Alice holds a qubit in some unknown state. She cannot measure it to learn what it is (measurement would destroy the very thing she wants to send), and she cannot copy it â the no-cloning theorem forbids that. So how can Bob, far away, end up with Alice's exact state?
The answer, found by Charles Bennett and colleagues in 1993, uses a shared pair of entangled particles plus a short phone call: just two classical bits. The state disappears from Alice and reappears at Bob, intact, with no copy left behind â and, crucially, no information travels faster than light.
